A man has appeared in court following an alleged weekend assault in Naas.

Before Naas District Court was Tadhg Kelly, 21, whose address was given as 21, Old Caragh Wood, Caragh.

It’s alleged he assaulted another man on March 15 last at North Main Street, Naas.

Detective Sergeant Philip Taylor told of charging the defendant on March 17 at Naas garda station. He said the defendant was also cautioned and he made no reply before being handed a copy of the charge.

Bail terms were agreed in the form of an independent surety of €5,000 provided by a family member and the defendant’s own bond of €500.

Det Sgt Taylor said the injured party is in an induced coma with a serious injury and he said further charges could be preferred in the case. He also said he did not yet have directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He told Judge Desmond Zaidan that the injured party is stable but his injuries are not known.

Judge Zaidan said he hoped the man makes a full recovery and adjourned the matter to mid-July.

As part of the bail conditions the defendant must reside at a named address, sign on three times a week at Naas garda station, provide a mobile phone number to gardaí and surrender his passport.

He must also also not apply for travel documents and have no contact with the injured party or State witnesses.
