'Stop being selfish'- Anger in Kildare after 'poor swan' mauled by dog off leash

A swan was attacked by a dog in Kildare and a warning has been issued to other dog owners by Kildare Wildlife Rescue.

A picture was shown of the bloodied swan with a warning on social media which has received a lot of attention from shocked and saddened people in Kildare.

Kildare Wildlife Rescue said that as we head into nesting season, "we are asking everyone to please keep your dogs leashed around wildlife.

"This poor swan was attacked by an off lead dog and is now recovering in our care.
"Swans are quite clumsy on land, and have a hard time year round avoiding off lead dogs, but they are especially vulnerable during nesting season.
"Keeping dogs on lead is an easy way to prevent Irish wildlife from becoming injured, or worse".
Many people commented on the post who were angry about the dog being off the lead which led to the attack. One person said: "Poor little swan. Minding it's own business and getting savaged by an off lead dog. People need to take greater responsibility. Thanks for helping".
Another person said: "People need to stop being selfish and keep the dogs leashed. Plenty thoughtless dog owners walking around Cork, loads of room for dogs on or off leash, yet they still aim for the little spot the ducks call home. I've seen dogs go into the water and give chase with owner happily watching".
