Going for glory: Kildare apprentice makes it to final of Screwfix Trade Apprentice competition

A talented apprentice from Caragh, Co Kildare is celebrating after being named one of the top ten finalists in this year’s Screwfix Trade Apprentice competition. 

Kellie Cullen, aged 19, who is currently training to be an electrician, fought off strong competition from more than 3,000 applicants from across the UK and Ireland to secure a coveted place in the national final and the chance to take home a career-boosting prize bundle of tools, training and technology worth €10,000. 

Standing out from the crowd 

Since beginning her electrician journey, Kellie wants to represent the next generation of electricians and inspire girls to get into the trade. Her current goal is to qualify and establish a strong reputation within in the industry. She hopes to gain more experience working abroad with her uncle, before returning to set up her own company.

Kellie's passion, work ethic and determination blew the judges away during the semi-final stage, earning her a place in the final ten. 

Speaking about reaching the final, Kellie said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have made it to the final of this year’s Screwfix Trade Apprentice competition! When I first applied, I never dreamed I’d get this far - it’s an incredible feeling. 

This journey has been all about pushing myself, growing as an electrician, and striving to be the best I can be. To have my hard work and passion recognised on a national stage is truly amazing, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!”

The final 

The two-day final will take place at Google HQ in London on April 29-30 2026. 

The top ten will take part in workshops, networking sessions and a face-to-face interview with an expert judging panel. 

The panel includes representatives from Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting, Federation of Master Builders, and Martin Daly - Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2025. 

Sarah Howell, Director of Marketing Communications at Screwfix, said: “Each year we’re blown away by the calibre of applications we receive for Screwfix Trade Apprentice, and this year was no different.

The final ten apprentices have achieved something remarkable, standing out from over 3,000 applicants to earn their place in this year’s final. Their talent, hard work, and commitment to their craft are a testament to the bright future of the trades, and I know the judges have an incredibly tough challenge to choose a winner. 

This competition plays a crucial role in highlighting the importance of trade apprentices, not just as individuals, but as the driving force behind the future success of the industry.”
