Irish Water (IW) / Uisce Éireann has said that it is currently monitoring water issues in both Newbridge and Athy.

On Friday last, the organisation insisted that water treatment plants supplying the two areas are operating satisfactorily with no known issues.

Now, although IW advises that the water supply to customers in Kildare 'is compliant with regulatory standards and is safe to drink', it added that sampling will now be intensified in the affected areas 'in order to gain a greater understanding and further protect public health, ensuring that the water continues to be compliant with drinking water regulations and is safe to drink.'

Kevin Love, Regional Asset Operations Lead at Uisce Éireann said, “We are currently investigating the source of the intermittent taste and odour issues mainly in the Newbridge and Athy area and continue to test the water to determine the root cause."

In Newbridge, Social Democrats councillor Chris Pender has said that, in response to the reports in the town, he has submitted a formal request under the Access to Information on the Environment legislation to IW.

He elaborated: "I am eagerly awaiting their response and will share the information with you as soon as it becomes available.

"Your health and wellbeing are of utmost importance, and I will continue to follow up on your concerns to ensure that our water supply is safe and clean across Kildare South."

Cllr Pender also said: "If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me."

The IW customer care helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact IW on Twitter http://twitter.com/iwcare with any queries or concerns.
