A number of Kildare County councillors who attended the Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting on Friday, June 2 last, welcomed the prospect of a new library for Clane.

The overwhelming support for the project was voiced by the councillors during a motion, in which they were asked to consider the Chief Executive’s Part 8 Report for the proposed New Public Library for Clane.

The proposed library will come in at an estimated 470 square metres.

It was also heard that construction for the library is expected to commence in early January of 2024, and should take around 10-12 months for construction to be completed.

The site would be divided into a children's section, a young adult's section and an adult's section.

Kildare County Council said that planned features for the building include: a sensory pod, study spaces, a sensory garden, and a meeting space.

Implementation of wi-fi and self-service technology on the premises was also discussed.

After listening to the report, which was read out by a representative for Kildare County Council, the councillors responded favourably to it.

Independent Cllr Pádraig McEvoy welcomed the report and proposed it, while Fine Gael Cllr Brendan Weld seconded it.

Cllr Weld also urged Kildare County Council to be aware of potential disruption caused by construction trucks coming to and from the construction site.

The councillors considered the proposal and the public consultation report. The committee approved the proposed scheme and agreed with the council to progress to the following stages of detailed design and an application to the Department of Rural and Community Development to publish a tender for the procurement of construction services.

Details of the proposal can be found here.
