A MAN WHO racially abused a female worker at a Kildare petrol station in front of a garda sergeant faces prosecution for multiple offences, gardaí have confirmed.

The incident took place at a petrol station in Naas last weekend, which saw the man's vehicle seized.

The sergeant was behind the man in a queue, when he began racially abusing a female member of staff.

Upon intervention by the sergeant, it transpired that the man's vehicle was not taxed or insured, and that he was a disqualified driver.

His vehicle was therefore seized by gardaí, according to a statement posted on X(formerly known as Twitter).

According to a statement by gardaí, the man will be issued with a court summons to appear before Naas District Court on four offences at a later date.

He faces prosecution for three driving offences, and for the alleged use of threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour in a public place.

"Gardaí take both hate crime and hate incidents extremely seriously and do not, under any circumstance, tolerate or accept racism towards any person," the statement from An Garda Síochana continued.

"Last year, An Garda Síochána introduced a Hate Crime Learning Programme to be undertaken by Gardaí nationwide, and there are trained Diversity Officers in each Garda Division. We work hard to promote a society that treats one another with dignity and respect in a fair and safe environment for people to live and work free from discrimination.

"We encourage anyone who has experienced a hate crime or incident motivated by hate for a personal characteristic such as their colour, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation to please come and speak with us in any station, at any time."
