Call to rename bridge after famous Kildare athlete

The call was made at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting. This meeting was held in Kildare County Council's headquarters at Áras Chill Dara, Devoy Park, Naas (PICTURED ABOVE).

Kildare County Council (KCC) has been asked to rename the Victoria Bridge.

The call was made by Fianna Fáil councillor Noel Heavey at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which was held on Wednesday, January 17 last.

He asked KCC to 'outline the process on how Liffey Bridge at Yeomanstown, presently called Victoria Bridge, can be renamed Larry Stanley Bridge.'

After Cllr Heavey was informed about the process via a report issued by KCC at the meeting, he noted to the members present that the bridge was originally named after Queen Victoria.

However, he said that he was of the belief that it should be renamed after Larry Stanley, Ireland's first-ever Olympian athlete, who hailed from Caragh.

Last month, Cllr Heavey's party colleague, Cllr Rob Power nominated for €1,000 to go towards the Caragh Community Development Association (CDA), for the purpose of constructing a lectern dedicated to Larry Stanley.

An additional €1,000 was nominated for the CDA by Fine Gael Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer.
