KILDARE COURT: Over the limit driver was on his way to treat a mosquito bite

An over the limit driver was on his way to get treatment for an insect bite, Naas District Court was told.

Vasilij Leleiko, 41, whose address was given as 60 Priory Square, St Raphael’s Manor, Celbridge, was found driving at Derrymullen, Allenwood, on June 11 last.

A breath sample returned a reading of 61.

Defending solicitor Brian Larkin told Judge Desmond Zaidan that the defendant was out fishing When “he got a bad bite.”

Mr Larkin said he believed a mosquito or a mosquito-type insect was responsible.

Mr Larkin added that the defendant had no repellant and went home for medication.

He said he had been fishing on the Grand Canal and there is an issue with insects at certain times of the year - and this would be apparent to anyone who has used the playing field adjacent to the canal at Naas GAA club. 

The court was told the defendant has no previous convictions.

Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed a €400 fine and a two year driving disqualification.
