Kildare County Council (KCC) was asked by a councillor to install a safe pedestrian crossing at Mount Carmel in Newbridge.

Fine Gael Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer made the request via a motion she put forward to KCC at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting held on Wednesday, February 21 last.

Specifically, Cllr Dwyer’s motioned for KCC 'to explore the possibility of installing a safe pedestrian crossing in the general area at Mount Carmel, Newbridge on the Sex’s Bridge side.'

Her motion was seconded by her party colleague Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer.

Speaking further on her motion, Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer said: "There are many schools and estates nearby.

"Could even a raised table be considered for this area?"

She also mentioned that some local residents have mobility issues.

Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer received further support from Social Democrats Cllr Chris Pender.

However, he added that he had concerns about the potential impact on the flow of traffic in the area.

Cllr Pender’s concerns were echoed by Fianna Fáil Cllr Noel Heavey.

“I assume that the assessment will take this into account,” Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer said.

In response, KCC had this to say at the meeting: "The request has been added to a list of similar type of requests for pedestrian crossing facilities in the county.

"The location shall be assessed to determine what type of pedestrian crossing facilities, if any, are warranted at this location."

KCC added that a funding source 'would have to be identified to deliver any such infrastructure following assessment.'
