Parents throughout County Kildare are being urged to sit down and talk with their children about the dangers of fireworks, especially with Halloween fast approaching.

Garda Chris Fallon made the appeal during his appearance on a KFM radio programme which aired yesterday (September 24 last).

He told host Clem Ryan that An Garda Síochána have asked parents to speak with their children on "the dangers and legalities" of fireworks.

Gda Fallon said: "They are extremely dangerous; cause serious damage to property and people; and upset animals."

He also mentioned a recent incident that he was aware of, in which a young person who handled fireworks ended up with "serious" injuries.

"Most of them [fireworks] are illegal", Gda Fallon further said.

Mr Ryan echoed Gda Fallon's sentiments, in which he said that fireworks "play havoc" with the senses of animals, and also criticised the "throwing of fireworks" in public places.

He added that the station would place further emphasis on the topic of fireworks in the lead up to Halloween.
