The installation of a new footpath in Rathangan would accommodate around 35 houses.

That's according to Fianna Fáil councillor Brian O'Loughlin, who made the comments within a motion he submitted at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting.

At this meeting, which took place on Wednesday, November 19 last, Cllr O'Loughlin motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to install a footpath along the R414 in Rathangan from the GAA grounds to Cribbons Lane.

"This would accommodate about 35 houses, including Cribbons Lane," he added.

His motion was seconded by Fine Gael Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer.

Independent Cllr Tom McDonnell also expressed support for the motion.

Replying to Cllr O'Loughlin's request, KCC said via the report it submitted at the meeting that a footpath at this location "would require third party land and significant design works".

However, KCC added: "Unfortunately, there is currently no funding available to carry out footpath works in this area."
