Recently on the N7 in Co Kildare, Naas Roads Policing Unit detected the driver of a HGV holding a mobile phone directly in front of their line of sight while travelling on a three-lane dual carriageway.
The motorist received:
Three penalty points
€120 Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN)
According to An Garda Síochána Kildare, mobile phones are the number one distraction on Irish roads, with driver distraction being a factor in 20-30% of all collisions in Ireland.

Why it’s so dangerous:
Even a quick glance takes your eyes off the road
Reaction times slow dramatically
Increased risk of lane drifting, missed hazards, or failing to stop in time
The message from An Garda Síochána is clear: “Your mobile phone — would it kill you to put it away? Arrive alive. Phone away. No message is worth a life.”
