Kildare County Council (KCC) has released an update on a plan which aims to facilitate the construction of 77 social housing units.

The update was given in response to a question which was heard at the latest Athy Municipal District (MD) meeting.

The question was submitted by Labour Party councillor Aoife Breslin, who asked KCC to provide an update on the construction of the housing units planned for Ardrew in Athy.

In response, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "KCC can confirm that the delivery of the 77 social housing units at Ardrew, Athy is progressing as part of the multi-site social housing bundle known as Project Barrow.

"The bundle comprises four sites in total: Ardrew, Athy (the sole Kildare site) and three additional sites located within the Dublin City Council area.

"The bundle is being advanced through a Design and Build (D&B) delivery model."

KCC continued:  "The first stage of the tender process for the appointment of a D&B contractor, was advertised in December 2025, and tenders have been received. The assessment of these submissions is currently underway.

"It is expected that the project will move to Stage 2 of the tender process later this month, with detailed tender evaluation to follow.

"Subject to completion of procurement procedures, a contract award is targeted for Q3 2026."

KCC concluded by asserting that it would continue to progress Project Barrow and that it would "provide further updates through the monthly Chief Executive Report as procurement advances".

Following this, Cllr Breslin said that she welcomed the report, calling it "a good news story".

She also thanked KCC's housing department for progressing the development.

The report was also praised by the Mayor of the MD, Fine Gael Cllr Ivan Keatley.
