The installation of intelligent sensor systems has been sought for pedestrian crossings located in the Clane-Maynooth Municipal District (MD).
The systems were suggested by Social Democrats councillor Peter Melrose at the latest MD meeting, which took place on Friday, April 10 last.

Cllr Melrose, who appeared at this meeting by virtual means, asked Kildare County Council (KCC): "Can KCC provide an overview of any plans to introduce intelligent sensor systems for pedestrian crossings including demand cancellations, dynamic green time detectors, and in-ground crossing lights in this Municipal District to increase efficiency in the Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique [SCOOT] system?"
In response to Cllr Melrose’s query, KCC issued a lengthy report, which read as follows: "All traffic signal junctions and pedestrian crossings use detection technology to improve efficiency.
"Traffic signals operate based on the presence and movement of vehicles rather than fixed timings, and pedestrian crossings use radar detectors to monitor traffic queues and gaps so that pedestrians can cross as efficiently as possible."
KCC continued: "Some pedestrian crossings can also use demand cancellation technology (pedestrian kerbside detectors). These detectors are relatively expensive and are therefore only installed where there is a demonstrated and recurring issue with abandoned pedestrian calls.
"Each location must be assessed individually as they are not suitable in all areas, particularly where footpaths are narrow or pedestrian activity is high.
"Dynamic green times are already provided through the existing detection systems and form part of how the SCOOT traffic control system operates."
KCC also said: "They are not included in KCC specifications and are not provided for in the Department of Transport’s Road Signs Manual."
KCC concluded by assuring Cllr Melrose that it will 'continue to keep the technologies under review and compliant with national guidance and when resources are available'.
