How a Kildare bypass has led to major traffic delays on a nearby road

Sallins

The Sallins bypass has created traffic problems on a nearby route connecting the town with Clane.

Cllr Evie Sammon said she has spent 20 to 30 minutes trying to use the route and she asked Kildare County Council to undertake a traffic survey of the Millicent Road/R407 junction “to establish wait times for vehicles and safety at the junction.”

She said, at a Naas Municipal District meeting, the problem is the amount of time it takes to use the intersection, adding “it’s not a dangerous junction.”

Cllr Sammon said local people are experiencing long delays in the mornings and evenings.

“It’s the volume of traffic that is the issue,” she said.

Cllr Carmel Kelly said the amount of traffic using the area has “increased out of all proportion since the bypass opened.”

Specifically, she added, problems are being created by the amount of traffic on the road travelling towards Clane through Millicent.

Cllr Kelly said a roundabout is needed on the road.

According to KCC a traffic survey was completed at the junction in October 2025 and the council “does not have the capability to establish wait times at junctions and can only record volume, speed and percentage HGV usage.”
