Gardai in Kildare are investigating the theft of diesel fuel at the grounds of a local national school.

Details of the crime were relayed by Maynooth garda Aidan McGrath, who appeared on Kfm's Crime Slot radio show this morning (April 15 2026.)

According to Gda McGrath, gardai are investigating a theft that occurred between 5pm on Wednesday, April 8 and 8am on Thursday, April 9 2026.

The incident occurred at Newtown National School, where construction work was being carried out.

Gda McGrath explained to host Hanna Kelly that a number of vehicles and plant machinery were left overnight by contractors.

When workers returned the following morning, they discovered that diesel to the value of €200 had been removed from the vehicles.

Gardai are currently looking at CCTV footage and exploring all avenues which may help in their investigation, with Gda McGrath stating the matter is being taken “very seriously” given the current climate.

Gardai are now appealing to members of the public who may have been in the Newtown area last Wednesday evening (April 8) or who may have noticed someone acting suspiciously around Newtown National School to contact gardai in Leixlip at 01 6667800.

A garda spokesperson stated: "Gardaí are investigating theft of fuel from 2 MPV’s in Kilcock Co. Kildare that occurred between 5:00pm on Wednesday 08th April, 2026 8:00am  on Thursday 09th April, 2026.

"Investigation remains ongoing."
