The construction of a shelter has been sought for a bus stop located near a hospice in County Kildare.

The request was made by Fine Gael councillor Peggy O'Dwyer at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which took place on Wednesday, April 15 last.

Specifically, she motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to construct the shelter for the bus stop located near St Brigid's Hospice in The Curragh.

Cllr O'Dwyer also admitted to KCC that she actually struggled to find the bus stop due to a lack of signage at the location.

Her motion was seconded by her party colleague, Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer.

Another local councillor who voiced support for the motion was Social Democrats Cllr Chris Pender, who told KCC: "It could be a potential spot for an orbital bus route."

In response to Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer's motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "The requested upgrade of the bus stops at St Brigid’s Hospice, The Curragh – Bus stop Reference 104081 and 103961, will be examined by KCC."

"Should the location be determined to be suitable from a road safety and future schedule point of view, the proposal will be raised for discussion with the National Transport Authority, service provider and Department of Defence (the landowner)," KCC added.

After receiving the report, Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer told KCC that she noted its contents (particularly KCC's point that the Department of Defence is the landowner of the location).

She also expressed optimism for the potential future of the project, adding: "I'm sure the Department of Defence would be willing to work with us on this."

Furthermore, a senior engineer for KCC who was also present at the meeting, Chris Galvin, assured Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer that KCC would look into the matter further for her.
