A local representative called on Kildare County Council (KCC) to provide more support to combat litter plaguing one South Kildare town.
Fine Gael councillor Kevin Duffy made the request at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Wednesday, April 15 last.
Specifically, he motioned for KCC to 'provide an update on the implementation of the commitment made under the Litter Management Plan to allocate one day per week of dedicated litter-picking support to Monasterevin, ensuring equitable service provision across the larger towns in the MD'.
In addition, as part of this motion, he wanted KCC 'to confirm when this additional support will commence to complement existing street-sweeping operations and the work of the Tidy Towns group'.
Cllr Duffy's motion was seconded by his party colleague, Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer.
In response, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "The MD Office does not currently have additional resources available to allocate to Monasterevin for dedicated litter-picking."

Despite this, KCC assured Cllr Duffy that the MD Office would 'liaise with KCC's Environment Section to agree when additional resources can be made available'.
Cllr O'Dwyer subsequently entered the discussion and told KCC that she had previously raised the subject of litter management at a full KCC meeting.
The Kilcullen-based rep also suggested: "Can we focus on [maintaining] the approach roads [within the MD] in May and June?"
Independent Cllr Pat Balfe, who attended the meeting by virtual means, then spoke and said that he supported Cllr O'Dwyer's idea.
