The ongoing boil water notice affecting over 3,000 residents in North Kilkenny is 'having a huge impact on the area', according to a local councillor.
Cllr John Brennan stated that 'people have been very patient so far' with efforts from Kilkenny County Council, Irish Water and the HSE to restore the water supply.
The boil water notice was issued for the Clogh-Castlecomer Public Water Supply just before Christmas due to turbidity issues in the water and that turbidity has yet to diminish to a safe level.
Areas impacted include Clogh, Moneenroe, Castlecomer and surrounding areas.
"Public health is the number one priority and the HSE need to have three clear tests before lifting the notice," Cllr Brennan explained.
"It was a major burst that caused this turbidity so when the notice is eventually lifted it's important that work will be done so that this won’t happen again," he added.
"It's been highlighted before but there is a continued need for future investment in the public water scheme here in North Kilkenny and additional funding is needed to upgrade the treatment plant."
Irish Water's James O’Toole said that they 'are continuing to address the turbidity issues at the treatment plant'.
"Once these issues have been addressed, and the plant is fully operational, we will undertake sampling, monitoring the performance of the plant with a move towards lifting the boil water notice, in consultation with the HSE," he added.
"Please be assured we are working to resolve the issue and lift the notice as quickly and as safely as possible."
Customers on the scheme are reminded that the water is safe to consume once boiled.
