Keep Kilkenny Beautiful is giving away 250 apple trees to residents of Kilkenny, which was once famous for its city orchards.
The group is inviting residents of Kilkenny City to participate in an apple tree planting initiative to help create a shared vision to restore orchard gardens to the city.
The fruit trees can be planted by communities or in private gardens. Planting apple trees is a positive climate action for humans and pollinators and promotes biodiversity and more sustainable food systems. All of the apple trees are sourced from Future Forest and grown from heirloom heritage varieties carefully chosen by the Kilkenny Fruit Tree Project.
To register go to slinacoille.ie/events/apple-tree-registration
After registering, participants will receive an email a week before collection with date and pick up and will receive guidance on how to prepare the soil and a video with instructions on how to plant.
The project also hopes to track the progress of the apples and will ask participants to send KKB a photo of their apple tree once planted and another photo of the tree when it gets its first apple.
Any contributions made to the project will go towards buying apple trees to run the project again next year.
