A nine-month prison sentence was handed down to a repeat offender at a recent sitting of Kilkenny District Court.

Ger Barry, Good Shepherd Centre, Kilkenny pleaded guilty to an attempted burglary at an address at a residential premises in Kilkenny City address on November 8, 2022,

Sergeant Morgan O’Connor told the court that gardaí received a report on the date in question of a male attempting to gain entry to a property at Desart Court on Ormonde Street.

A camera was on the door which captured an image of a male attempting to gain entry with his hand on the door. The incident took place at 10.50pm.

Solicitor Ed Hughes said that the defendant admitted that he tried the door but said it was locked and nothing was taken and added that his client was fully cooperative with gardaí.

“My client has been in and out of jail a lot over the past 20 years and struggles enormously to deal his addiction, He appears to have some insight and when he is not on drugs he is very pleasant to be around.

“He has never received a conviction for a violent type offence. His offending is opportunistic to feed his addiction,” said Mr Hughes.

Sgt O’Connor pointed out to the court that the incident happened five days after the defendant, who has numerous previous convictions for similar type offences, was released from prison.

Judge Geraldine Carthy remarked that the court is ‘very familiar with Mr Barry’ and convicted the defendant and imposed a nine-month prison sentence.
