A man has been brought to court and charged with assault causing serious harm following the death of his son in Kilkenny on Monday.

Zbigniew Besnarczyk (61), 21 Meadow Way, Kilkenny, appeared before Carlow District Court this afternoon. He is charged under Section 4 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.

Mr Besnarczyk, who was in court dressed in a grey tracksuit and black trainers, did not speak during the appearance. He was assisted in court by a Polish interpreter.

Detective Garda Brian Sheeran said the accused did not reply when charged. The detective garda said he attended at 21 Meadow Way on Monday, February 27, in response to a call about a stabbing incident.

At the scene the son of the accused, Rafal Besnarczyk Jacyna, was found dead. He had sustained one stab wound to the thigh which had damaged the femoral artery. He was lying on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood.

The detective Garda said a knife was observed on the kitchen table and seized. He said it will be alleged there as an argument between the accused and his son, during which the younger man sustained an injury that caused his death.

Gardaí objected to bail being granted to the accused on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence and fears he is a flight risk.

Solicitor Thomas Walsh said his client maintained that what had occurred was an accident. He denied Mr Besnarczyk was a flight risk.

Judge Geraldine Carthy denied bail. Mr Besnarczyk was remanded in custody to appear before Kilkenny District Court, via video link, next Monday.

She expressed her sympathies to the family.
