Tributes following death of Johnny Aylward - Kilkenny Live

The late Johnny Aylward

Tributes are being paid to Johnny Aylward of Shanbough, Rosbercon, County Kilkenny, following his brave and long-fought battle with Motor Neuron Disease.

Johnny and the Aylward family captured the hearts of a nation when they featured on the latest season of hit television show DIY SOS: The Big Build.

Johnny was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in November 2020, and discovered in early 2021 that he had the most aggressive type.

DIY SOS Presenter Baz Ashmawy described Johnny as 'a born entertainer and an absolute charmer' and the DIY SOS team have issued a statement stating that their thoughts are with his heartbroken family.

"Johnny was a strong advocate for families impacted by Motor Neuron Disease and fought a bleak prognosis with dignity, humour and courage," the statement read.

"Warm memories of Johnny, late of beautiful Shanbough, Co Kilkenny, will be forever in our hearts. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dilis."

New Ross Musical Society also stated that they 'were heartbroken to hear the news'.

"Johnny was a character on and off the stage, and despite his recent illness always managed to bring a smile to your face," they said.

Johnny passed away peacefully at his residence in the loving care of his loving wife Lynn, with an illness borne with courage and dignity. He is predeceased by his father Mikey.

Deeply regretted by his heart broken wife Lynn, mother Minnie, children Kelly, Aaron, Colin, Cian, Aaron (his partner Aoife), Dáire, and Mikey, grandson Fionn, son-in-law David, brothers, sisters, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

Johnny will be reposing in Doyle's Funeral Home, The Old Rectory Rosbercon, New Ross from 3pm on Wednesday 15th concluding at 7pm.

Funeral to arrive at The Church of The Assumption Rosbercon, for Requiem Mass at 12 noon Thursday 16th March followed by burial afterwards in the adjoining Cemetery.

Family flowers only please donations if desired to Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA).
