This month Seán Kelly, MEP for Ireland South, welcomed fifty constituents from across Ireland South to the European Parliament in Brussels, including a number of individuals from Kilkenny.

John Ryan and Martin Brett from Co Kilkenny joined other visitors for a tour of the European Parliament’s hemicycle chamber and information sessions with MEPs and Parliament officials. Visitors had the chance to learn more about the day-to-day functioning of the Parliament and the variety of work undertaken by MEPs.

The group were particularly pleased to be joined by MEP, and former Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius.

MEP Kubilius shared his perspective on how the EU can continue to support the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Kelly said: “I am always delighted to welcome constituents from across Ireland South to the European Parliament. Sponsored visits such as this one are a wonderful opportunity to highlight the work we do here in the Parliament. By its nature, the EU legislative process can be complex and sometimes opaque, having constituents visits the Parliament is a way to bridge the gap between our work here in Parliament, and what is happening on the local level.”

“It was also beneficial to speak with the group and to hear their concerns and hopes for Europe. As the voice for members of my constituency in the EU, engagements such as this are extremely important for orientating my work in the European Parliament.”

During their time in Belgium, the group also had the opportunity to visit Brugge, Ypres, and historical WW1 battlegrounds known as the Flanders Fields.
