Jo Hennessy who is Participation and Education Officer at Barnstorm Theatre Company
Barnstorm Theatre Company has undergone many changes in recent years including the appointment of a Participation and Education Officer with a wealth of experience.
In addition to being a trained actor, Jo has had a successful career working as a drama teacher and facilitator for the past ten years in Australia.
Having dedicated her career to using drama as a tool for social good, Jo is now focused on bringing the power of theatre to even more areas of the community. She wants to ensure that those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience theatre can access the same benefits that she has seen in her years of teaching and facilitating.
Jo has already developed new and exciting programmes for Barnstorm, including the re-establishment of the Barnstorms Adult Theatre Club which is affectionately called the ATC and meets every Thursday evening from 7-9pm.
During these sessions adults get to learn about the world of theatre including developing characterisation for script work, using improvisation methods for creating realistic characters.
“Above all else we provide a space for people wanting to acquire acting skills to explore, learn and play. As adults, we don't get to do this very often,” said Jo.
Jo also works with schools on a regular basis and will deliver the Moving Up Project shortly which explores the big move to post primary school for sixth class students through forum theatre and process drama. She is also in talks with local post primary schools to create a Transition Year programme.
“I’m excited about the areas that we can develop further within education. Having spent ten years teaching drama in Australia. I have seen firsthand the impact theatre can have in a post primary environment. It is extremely important in the development of our young people,” she added.
Jo is passionate about her work and loves to engage with children and young adults in creative ways. She is also a keen advocate for the importance of education and believes in the power of theatre and storytelling to inspire. Additionally, Jo plans to deliver programmes at County Council Library Workshops for Bookville.
Artistic Director, Philip Hardy adds;
“We are excited to see what the future holds as we embark on this new era of participation at Barnstorm.
“Jo Hennessy is the perfect person to help us make a real difference in our community, and we are proud to have her on board”.
