"Kilkenny urgently needs a river management plan."

That's according to Cllr Eugene McGuinness, who once again raised the issue at month's full meeting of Kilkenny County Council.

"The river is choked to death," he told council officials.

"There are currently seats looking into ditches. The viewing area on Maudlin Street is no longer a viewing area."

The councillor asked if remedial work can be undertaken to remove some of the growth on the river banks.

Director of Services Tim Butler told the councillor that many of these areas have now become habitats, making it difficult to commence remedial work.

"We may be limited in what we can do," he said.

"We will be seeking a meeting in next month or two [with the relevant authorities] and will report back."
