A colourful four-foot baby elephant has taken centre stage in Samaritans charity shop on Kieran Street this week. The elephant is part of a mental health awareness campaign run by former rugby star Brent Pope in aid of Samaritans.

Dozens of artists have been painting fiberglass sculptures for the Elephant in the Room project, which will eventually see the elephants auctioned and displayed in businesses and organisations nationwide to show they are an open and safe space for people to work.

The Samaritans elephant is by artist Niall O’Loughlin. It will be displayed in the Samaritans charity shop on Kieran Street before being brought to the branch’s James Bond night, where Brent Pope will be guest speaker on Saturday. Brent has also said he is looking forward to coming to Kilkenny for the James Bond Gala event.

The Samaritans elephant by artist Niall O’Loughlin features former broadcaster Charlie Bird – a supporter of Samaritans - and some of his most treasured memories, including Tiger his dog and climbing Croagh Patrick.

“We are honoured to be unveiling this elephant which is a tribute to Charlie Bird in our little shop here in Kilkenny and also to be part of the Elephant In the Room movement working to break down the stigma surrounding mental health,” said Colette Shannon, volunteer.
