Over 11,000 children in Kilkenny to benefit from free school books

Councillor Andrew McGuinness with Minister for Education Norma Foley

Local Councillor Andrew McGuinness has today welcomed that 11,202 children in Co. Kilkenny will benefit from free school books, workbooks and copy books from this September.

This has been made possible through the provision of €1,075,392 worth of funding in Kilkenny.

Nationwide, more than 558,000 pupils enrolled in over 3,230 primary schools, including over 130 special schools, will benefit from the scheme. This scheme will significantly ease the financial burden facing families during back to-school time.

Over €50 million has been made available to support this scheme, including an administrative grant for schools rolling out the scheme.

“This is a landmark moment for Irish education, and one which will provide significant benefit for families around the country. I'm delighted to see this initiative come to fruition as it will be a huge help in terms of easing the burden off families, particularly those who are struggling financially,” said Cllr. Andrew McGuinness.
