Wildfires erupt on island popular with holidaymakers from Kilkenny

Villages evacuated following wildfire in the Canary Islands

Raging wildfires have struck the picturesque island of Tenerife, a tourist haven for holidaymakers in Spain's Canary Islands.

The fires have consumed vast swathes of land in the mountainous area surrounding the Mount Teide volcano, prompting an urgent response from firefighters as they battle to contain the inferno.

As the blazes continue to spread, concerns are escalating about the devastating impact on the region's natural landscape and on local communities.

The fires have consumed approximately 1,800 hectares of land so far, wreaking havoc as emergency services scramble in a bid to try contain their spread.

Authorities have raised concerns over the potential for the wildfires to intensify and advance toward popular tourist destinations including Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz.
