The Mayoral reception for the Kilkenny Musical Society
Kilkenny Musical Society were acknowledged with a Mayor's Reception at City Hall on Tuesday to celebrate their 50th Anniversary.
Mayor Joe Malone praised the society for their hard work and determination in keeping the art of musicals alive in Kilkenny. "Its an honor for me as Mayor to acknowledge such a great group of people that do so much work for theatre in Kilkenny. Generations of local people have taken part in musicals over the last 50 years and have excelled in their acting skills thanks to the Musical Society. We are lucky in Kilkenny to have so many talented people willing to put their shoulders to the wheel to keep us all entertained.
Society member David Doyle was also acknowledged for winning an AIMS Award at the Mayoral reception.
Local Councillor Andrew McGuinness who proposed the acknowledgment said,
"I want to thank the Mayor for hosting the event as its a significant milestone for the Musical Society and only fitting that it be held in City Hall where one of the founders, the late great Donal O'Brien, spent a lot of his working life. I also want to pay tribute to Kitty Drohan who founded the society with Donal. Im sure they are looking down with pride as a whole new generation continue the great work that they started."
Current Society Chairman Mark Duffy spoke on behalf of the group and thanked the Mayor and Cllr McGuinness while touching on a brief history of the last 50 years.
