'Leave the points race behind' - Alternative to CAO available to Kilkenny students

'Leave the points race behind' - Kilkenny students offered alternative to CAO race

Martha Bolger - Director of Further Education and Training

As Kilkenny students consider their next chapter following Leaving Certificate results day, school-leavers are being reminded of the alternative to CAO courses.

The Kilkenny-Carlow Education and Training Board (KCETB) offer students 'many' and 'varied' FET (Further Education & Training) courses at Ormonde College of Further Education in Kilkenny and Carlow Institute of Further Education and Training, including: Engineering, Computer Science, Games and Apps Development, Law & Criminology, Media Studies and Fine Art.

These courses can provide students with pathways to higher education or direct entry into their chosen career and an ability to study close to home.

SOLAS, the Further Education & Training Authority, says choosing a PLC (Post-Leaving Certificate Course) offers students "an opportunity to leave the points race behind and shape their own pathway towards a future career that suits them."

Martha Bolger, Director of FET at KCETB commented: "The opportunities are endless for students in Kilkenny and Carlow, with the local provision of a number of Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) and pre-university courses available," adding, their courses offer "pathways for learners to study at degree level or to direct employment in an array of exciting careers."

Andrew Brownlee, CEO at SOLAS, said: "Our advice is that there’s more than one way to reach your full potential after school and I encourage you to take the time to choose the path that’s right for you," adding, "there is life beyond the Leaving Certificate, with endless opportunities available through FET to get students to where they want to be."
