Active Retirement Kilkenny had cause to celebrate on Monday as members of the group gathered at the Castle Park grounds for the unveiling of a bench in memory of deceased members.
Group members came out in their numbers to be part of the celebrations. Attendees met at the newly unveiled bench, located adjacent to the park’s playground.
Local women Kit Quinn and Breda O’Donoghue had the honour of opening the bench, cutting the ribbon to mark Kilkenny’s newest landmark.
Those in attendance welcomed a new era for Active Retirement in Kilkenny with a cheer, highlighting not only their respect for the past, but their hopes for the future.
The occasion offered members an opportunity to reminisce on days gone by with friends, old and new.
Mayor of Kilkenny, Joe Malone, hailed the group’s work in the Kilkenny community, praising the hard work being done behind the scenes which makes numerous activities and days out possible for the group on a weekly basis.
The group meet every second Monday at the Club House Hotel for refreshments and activities such as bowling, line dancing and walks take place often.
As part of the celebrations, the Mayor took the opportunity to present Breda O’Donoghue, one of the most senior and respected members of the group, with a bouquet of flowers in honour of her contributions.
Mayor Malone paid tribute to deceased members and stood with group members in a moment’s silence.
The local public representative concluded his remarks by inviting members of Active Retirement to City Hall for tea and refreshments at a later date.
