The wait for a Tesco store in Kilkenny looks set to shortly come to an end, with no fewer than three new stores mooted to open in the county in the coming months.
Mayor of Kilkenny Joe Malone, has confirmed plans are progressing to introduce two new stores in Kilkenny City. Another is on the way for Ferrybank in the south. Currently, Kilkenny is the only county in Ireland without a Tesco store.
As it stands, the mayor says a Tesco Express Store is expected to open its doors on High Street in the property vacated by Argos, while just over five acres of the old mart site on the outskirts of the city is due to be developed for retail use by the supermarket giant.
Speaking to the Kilkenny People, Mayor Malone said the two city stores are expected to create in the region of 350 jobs locally with zero hour contracts not set to be included in staff contracts.
"I welcome both developments but particularly the Tesco Extra on High Street because I think it will bring good footfall to the street and that’s what’s needed," he said.
