The National Reptile Zoo in Kilkenny will host an event on November 11
Science Week, a national celebration of science, is running from November 12 to 19 with hundreds of fun, engaging and interactive events taking place nationwide.
This year’s Science Week aims to spark a national conversation about what it means to be human in today’s world, and how the decisions we make today will impact the people and world of the future.
The people of Kilkenny are being asked to get involved in the Human? conversation and to consider what lies ahead for future generations. From the climate emergency to social interaction and artificial intelligence, how will future generations be impacted?
This year the Kilkenny Science Festival has online and in-person events for people of all ages to enjoy. Some events taking place in Kilkenny not to be missed include:
- Reptile Zoo to You, Hebron Industrial Estate, November 11 at 9:15am. Come and see some of the world's most incredible creatures, from snakes and spiders to lizards, crocodiles and more! These educational workshops offer a unique experience to get up close and personal with our scaled friends and to learn more about these beautiful creatures.
- Science Comedy Night, Cleere's Theatre Kilkenny, November 12, 8pm. Watch what happens when science and comedy fuse in this debut Kilkenny Science Festival comedy event, where Sean is joined by special guests musing on all things science, with no topic off limits. Not to be missed!
Speaking about Science Week, Minister Harris said:
“Science Week is always a great opportunity to have people engage with science and research through fun, engaging and interactive events. I am delighted that my Department continues to fund such informative and thought-provoking events.
"As humans, our activities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) will help shape the future of innovation, progress, and the betterment of society.
"We know our society faces many challenges but I believe through research, science and innovation we will be better equipped to face these head on," he said.
Science Week 2023 also provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the impact that developments in STEM have on future generations – both the marvels and possibilities, while also considering the responsibility to mitigate potential pitfalls and ethical
dilemmas. I would encourage everyone to take part in Science Week, by attending a festival or event and get involved in the stimulating fun and animated conversations on offer this week aiming to shape our collective future.”
Commenting on the Human? theme for this year’s Science Week, Director General, Science Foundation Ireland, Professor Philip Nolan said: “Science Week festivals and events are open to people of all ages, and I would encourage everyone in the Kilkenny area to take the time to attend these wonderful events. There are a wide range of fun and engaging events taking place across Kilkenny over the course of Science Week. This year’s theme, Human? offers the opportunity to think about how the decisions we have made in our lives will affect people in the future.”
Science Week 2023 will take place from November 12 to 19.
