Last night, at approximately 11.30pm, Kilkenny Roads Policing members were assisting their Carlow colleagues near a filling station in Carlow.
While on patrol, they noticed a vehicle and driver exit the premises with no lights, no seatbelt and after stopping the vehicle found out that he was only 14-years-old.
"Apparently he was taking the vehicle for a spin without the permission of its owner," according to garda spokesperson.
"This was possible because the car owner who was at the garage with his friends had left his keys in the ignition.
"There were all the ingredients present for a devastating fatal collision, not an accident as people so often say.
"On this occasion, the dice rolled favourably and the outcomes are manageable."
