Kilkenny man granted freedom of London

Kilkenny man Seamus McGarry has been awarded the freedom of the City of London for services to the Irish Diaspora over many years.

Seamus was born in Johnstown but later emigrated to England with his family. His father Jimmy trained the Johnstown minor team in the early 1960s, a team which later went on to win the senior county final three years in a row in the 1970s.

Seamus hasn't forgotten his Johnstown roots and has kept his father's hurling legacy going, becoming a well-known hurling figure in London and Hertfordshire.

The local man is no stranger to accolades and in 2013 he was awarded the 'Presidential Distinguished Award' to the Irish abroad. This achievement recognises service given to this country or to Irish communities abroad by those who live outside Ireland.
