The megalithic passage tomb in Knockroe will be the venue for the morning and evening winter solstice tomorrow (Thursday). This year the sunrise occurs at 8.40am and the sunset at 3.40pm.
Visitors are advised to allow 30 minutes to get to the site, wear sturdy footwear, to be aware that it is an important national monument and to assist the stewards to achieve the best experience for everyone.
For the occasion the Lingaun Valley Tourism Group, the OPW and the Cashel Conservation Committee will be on hand to arrange parking and provide refreshments to visitors. A guest speaker is scheduled to attend both the morning and evening events.
Visitors to the solstice in the Lingaun Valley are invited to join guided tours of Windgap Village and Grotto at 11.30am and of the Slatequarries at 1.45pm, to allow time to be back for the evening Solstice. Breakfasts and dinners are available in the Lakeside Tea Rooms in Windgap - to ensure availability call 051-626944 in advance.
Hot beverages will also be available in the local shops in Windgap, Kilmoganny and Nine Mile House.
