Kilkenny councillor advocates for strong policing in rural towns in meeting with Garda Commissioner

A Kilkenny councillor has raised the level of garda resources in Kilkenny and policing in rural towns with the Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris.

In a proactive move to address the concerns surrounding policing in rural towns, North Kilkenny Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick met with Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris at a Joint Policing Committee meeting in Wicklow earlier this month to emphasise the critical importance of maintaining adequate Garda numbers in Kilkenny and across the country as the representative of Ailg (Association of Irish Local Government).

"I took the opportunity to meet directly with Commissioner Harris and seek assurances that  Kilkenny will not see any reduction in garda numbers following on from the fallout of the Dublin disturbances," he said referring to the riots in the capital on November 23.

"We also discussed many other issues such as improving equipment and a commitment that no garda station in this country would close under his watch," he said.

The meeting served as a platform for Cllr Fitzpatrick to relay the pressing concerns of the local community and highlight the pivotal role of An Garda Síochana in addressing key issues in Kilkenny.

During the meeting, Cllr Fitzpatrick commended the efforts of An Garda Síochana in Kilkenny in addressing issues related to drug abuse and crime rates. The councillor also underscored the significance of sustaining these efforts and stressed that a shortage of manpower could undermine the progress made in tackling such crucial matters.

"Citizens in rural towns deserve a strong and visible police presence to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities. I want to express my gratitude for the outstanding work of An Garda Síochana in Kilkenny and emphasise the need for continued support to maintain and bolster our local policing efforts," remarked Cllr Fitzpatrick.

“It is vital to advocate for the welfare of the people of Kilkenny and to ensure that An Garda Síochana has the necessary resources to continue their crucial work.”

The discussion delved into the unique challenges faced by rural areas and the importance of tailored strategies to address them effectively. Cllr  Fitzpatrick presented data and community feedback to substantiate the need for sustained resources and personnel in tackling local issues.

Garda Commissioner Harris acknowledged the insights provided by Cllr  Fitzpatrick and assured him of his commitment to working collaboratively to address the concerns raised. The Commissioner also expressed his appreciation for the proactive engagement of local representatives in fostering a safer environment for residents.
