Gardaí are investigating the fire

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fire at a camp outside a vacant property in Urlingford that is earmarked to house Ukranian refugees.

People had gathered at the site of the former Josephine's restaurant last week to protest over using the building to house asylum seekers. A protest took place on Saturday in the North Kilkenny town over the planned use of the property to house refugees.

At around midnight on Saturday emergency services were alerted to a fire at a camp used by the protesters. The fire services attended and gardaí are carrying out an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire and are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that the protesters have now left and abandoned the makeshift camp over the weekend.
