Today marks an historic anniversary in Kilkenny
On this day in 1876, took place the marriage of James Butler, 3rd Marquess of Ormonde and Elizabeth Grosvenor at Alford Church, Cheshire.
Butler was born in Kilkenny on October 5, 1844 and died on October 26, 1919. The local man was the last Marquess of Ormonde to live at Kilkenny Castle
Lady Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of the Duke of Westminster. She wore a dress of white satin, trimmed with Brussels lace and bunches of orange flowers and myrtle.
The wedding breakfast was served at Eaton hall, residence of the father of the bride. On this occasion the couple received numerous presents including gifts from Queen Victoria and from the Princess of Wales, Princess Victoria.
The Marquess and Marchioness were married for 43 years
