Remember, the truth is rarely pure and never simple, and in matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity, is the vital thing.

The Curriculum Play Live series is a project by Barnstorm Theatre Company. The series started in 2016 with Translations by Brian Friel, and has continued with other classics such as The Plough and the Stars, All My Sons, and Philadelphia, Here I Come! The Importance of Being Earnest is the latest play in the series, and it is a brilliant comedy by Oscar Wilde.

The Importance of Being Earnest is his most well-known and best-loved play and some would say the pinnacle of his writing. First performed in 1895, the play tells the story of two men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who both assume the identity of a fictional man named Ernest, leading them both to fall in love and find an assortment of problems along the way.

Oscar Wilde’s madcap farce about mistaken identities, secret engagements, and lovers’ entanglements still delights readers more than a century after its 1895 publication and premiere performance. The rapid- fire wit and eccentric characters of The Importance of Being Earnest have made it a mainstay of the secondary school curriculum for decades.
