Keep Kilkenny Beautiful celebrate Tree Week

Keep Kilkenny Beautiful launched their National Tree Week planting with two events at the Black Quarry Park and Loughboy Park.

Volunteers from KKB were on hand to support the resident volunteers from both areas to plant 21 semi mature native trees.

National Tree Week aims to highlight the benefits of trees for nature and human health. Trees are a win win for communities and Minister Malcolm Noonan said that his Department will be meeting Local Authorities in the coming months to outline requirements for urban tree cover under the National Restoration Plan following the passing of the EU Nature Restoration Law.

Chair of Keep Kilkenny Beautiful,  Cllr Maria Dollard added that planting the right tree in the right place is the best way to safeguard trees for the future and planting a tree is an act of hope and faith for future generations.

The events were organised by KKB special projects officer Pat Boyd in partnership with the residents and the trees were donated by Paddy Mangan from Free Trees Ireland. Pat Boyd liaised with residents and with Martin Gaffney of Kilkenny County Council and Pat Durkin of Birdwatch Kilkenny. Pat Boyd is well renowned for his love of promoting the planting of native Irish trees and his mantra is “the best time to plant a tree was yesterday”

Of course the second best time to plant a tree is today and Keep Kilkenny Beautiful will be out planting this weekend for our last event of the year in collaboration with residents in Robertshill and Loughboy. All welcome to come along.
