Kilkenny boxer begins professional career TONIGHT!

Clogh boxer, Brandon McCarthy has announced he is stepping into the professional ranks after a successful stint as an amateur.

The 23-year-old has claimed 16 National Titles and European and World Championships at every level during his time as an amateur and now feels the time is right to continue his 'dream'.

"I've been working hard and developing my craft for the past few months in Los Angeles training at Matchroom Churchill Gym and coached by some of the best coaches in the world. I‘ve a great team around me and I’m excited to get going," he said.

The local boxer has visited multiple locations around the world during his spell as an amateur, and the Kilkenny native believes the boxing lifestyle which has brought him to far-flung places has put him in good stead for what's ahead.

"I've always loved being away," he said. "It is hard, I do miss my family and I do miss being at home, but I have no distractions over here so I feel I can put my full focus into training, recovery, resting and being in the right environment and being around the right people.

"I still have a lot to learn. I’m lucky enough I’m in a great gym here in Santa Monica where there’s some of the best professional boxers in the world. It’s great to mix with some of them.

"I want to thank everyone who has helped get me to the position I’m in today, from my family who do so much for me since I started training with my dad when I was six years old, my mother and sisters being my biggest supporters, my amateur boxing club, St Michael’s Athy and Dominic O’Rourke who looked after me during an amazing amateur career," he stated.

McCarthy will begin his professional career tonight at the Fox Theatre, San Francisco.
