The weekend’s soccer fare was dominated by McCalmont Cup action with a number of ties down for decision.

There was six games in total on Sunday morning as well as the meeting between Evergreen B and Evergreen C at the Kells Road on Friday night.

That game was part of a unique double with Evergreen A also taking on Evergreen 46 as the club’s four senior teams all faced each other in competition.

As expected Evergreen B had too much for their C counterparts as they cruised to a 4-0 success on Friday and Evergreen A also booked their passage into the next round with goals from Andrew Wall, Chris Whearty and David Grincell contributing to a 6-0 win over Evergreen 46.

Elsewhere Freebooters who were fresh from their Maher Shield win over Evergreen had another city derby when they met Ormonde Villa at Garringreen. As expected they were too strong for their lower division opponents in a 4-1 victory.

Eddie Nugent with a brace, Ger Hayes and Jim Ryan were the goalscorers for ’Booters while Villa’s goal in response came from Cian Grace.

Thomastown United were another Premier Division outfit to put their names in the hat for the next round as they grabbed a 3-0 win at home against Castlewarren Celtic.

Luke Skehan and Rory Monks (2) rubberstamped their spot in the quarter-finals as the South Kilkenny side continue their fine season to date.

The other games saw Deen Celtic A win 4-0 against Lions B at the Watershed, while Premier Division high fliers Bridge United scored three in their victory against Deen Celtic B in Goresbridge.

The final cup clash of the weekend then saw Callan United run out 2-0 winners at Lions A expense.

Seven of the eight quarter-finalists are now known with the remaining last 16 game between Freebooters B and Stoneyford United taking place this Sunday at the Fairgreen. Attention will switch back to league affairs before those quarter-finals take place in the last weekend of April.

There was also two games in the Junior Division Two Emerald Tiles League as Spa United won 4-0 away to Tullaroan B while Newpark and Stoneyford United shared four goals in a 2-2 draw in Knocktopher.

A full league programme of games will then return over the Easter weekend with three games in the Junior St Canice’s Credit Union Premier Division down for decision.

Evergreen’s quest to win another title continues when they travel to Castlecomer to meet Deen Celtic, Callan United host Highview Athletic and Thomastown meet Bridge United in United Park.

The weekend’s action is concluded with further games in Divisions One and Two.
