Catherine (Kitty) Kearney with her son Tony
Hundreds of people from Co Kilkenny and further afield have sent good wishes and donations to Catherine (Kitty) Kearney after her recent Bulbar Onset Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis.
Ms Kearney (68) has five children; Amy, Sabrina, Jonathan, Jason and a son with Down Syndrome, Tony and has been a Carer all her life with The Irish Wheelchair Association and The Carers Association.
The local woman is also a survivor of Cervical Cancer.
On March 5 last, Ms Kearney received the devastating news of her MND diagnosis with the 'enormity' of the diagnosis and the 'challenges' it will provide starting to become 'reality' according to her daughter Amy Kearney.
A GoFundMe page has been created to assist with the high costs of medical care the Kilkenny woman will need to battle the disease. So far, €6,495 has been raised by the local community as of (April 4).
"Since the diagnosis she has maintained a positive outlook, with the support of her Family and Friends. However, Funds are required to aid her battle," Amy said.
In an emotional post to the GoFundMe site, the loving daughter claimed her family will need to be 'brave together as a family'.
"Anyone that knows our mam will know that she will approach this disease like she did with battling cervical cancer and everything in life so far, believing nothing is impossible. Our hope for cure one day will keep us going. But for now, trying to slow down the progression of MND through various medical treatments, trials and looking after Mam's mental health and wellbeing is important," she stated
"We have decided to set up this GoFundMe page for people to donate to help her with possible treatments abroad to sustain quality of life, eventual aids that will be needed for our home and transport etc. It will help us enjoy the time we have together without worrying about day to day financial issues," adding, "what it will mean for us to get this support from everyone to give mam all the help she needs and deserves."
