In a nation where storytelling is the national past-time, Mary Kate O’Flanagan laid claim to the title of Ireland’s Grand Slam Champion Storyteller at The Moth, at The Abbey Theatre in 2015.

A story of Mary Kate’s went viral on TikTok on Father’s Day 2023, gaining over 1.4 million views in two days and, maybe more notably, the comments section is entirely positive. It has been included in The Top Ten Stories on The Moth on PBS radio, as well as being named by many as their favourite Moth story ever.

Now she has turned a number of her stories into a piece of theatre, Making A Show of Myself, which is coming to Kilkenny next month.

This show, which has earned standing ovations and stellar reviews, contains six of her award-winning true-life tales, woven together with insights into why storytelling is an essential part of being human.

Mary Kate loves her day job as a story consultant for film and television but she comes alive at night when she tells her true-life stories on stage to an audience.

Mary Kate trained in the craft of screenwriting with the professors of screenwriting at The University of Southern California.

She has worked as a tutor alongside her former professors for the last ten years. She has continued to be mentored by them, in particular David Howard, author of The Tools of Screenwriting. She is a guest tutor at the Czech Film School FAMU and The National Film School in Ireland as well as a lead tutor on pan-European programmes.

In the last year she has given intensive workshops and lectures on screenwriting in Prague, London, Cologne, Pilzen, Valletta as well as Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Making A Show of Myself, by Mary Kate O Flanagan is directed by Will O’Connell. The show comes to the Watergate Theatre on Friday, May 10. Tickets €20/€18
