Shefflin to go the extra-mile to raise funds for cardiac health - Kilkenny Live

Shamrocks Ballyhale's Evan Shefflin

Shamrocks Ballyhale hurler, Evan Shefflin will take part in the Great Limerick Run on Sunday, May 5, in an attempt to raise funds and awareness for the organisation Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) Ireland.

CRY Ireland provide free clinical assessment and management to all families of young people who are living with a cardiac condition or have suffered, or are at risk of a sudden cardiac death.

The charity also supports family members who have lost a loved one due to a cardiac condition.

Shefflin has established himself in the Shamrocks Ballyhale senior hurling team over the past six years, winning multiple club, provincial and All-Ireland titles in a glittering period for the South Kilkenny club.

The Shamrocks man has also worn the black and amber jersey of Kilkenny at underage level.

"My family has had first hand experience of the work that is being done at CRY Ireland and I felt like that is the least I could do for such an incredible organisation," Shefflin told the Kilkenny People.

"I also think it’s really important for people to know that there are organisations out there that offer such vital services to young people and their health," he added.

Shefflin is preparing to take part in a half-marathon on the day and with the event a little over three weeks away, the GAA player’s preparation is nearing the finishing line.

"There’s nothing crazy in the training involved. I have a 12 week program tailored to a certain time that I would like to run the half marathon," he said.

"I'm trying to run three days a week with one long run, one medium run and one short speed session," Shefflin added, and with the GAA season slowly returning, the Ballyhale man has hailed the club’s early season training sessions for improving his fitness levels ahead of the marathon.

"With the hurling slowly coming back now, it is harder to get all those runs in but the hurling training has definitely helped as well."
