A compelling one-woman show exploring the remarkable life of Violet Gibson, who shot Mussolini, will be performed in Kilkenny this weekend.
Audiences will be transported back to one of the most gripping moments in history with this one-woman show which delves into the fascinating life of Violet Gibson, the courageous Irish aristocrat who attempted to alter the course of history by shooting Benito Mussolini on April 7, 1926. She was 49 and shot him at point-blank range hitting the tip of his nose when he drew his head back in response to a group of Boy Scouts singing Giovinezza.
Through a blend of drama, emotion, and historical accuracy, the show sheds light on the complexities of Gibson’s life, motivations, and the turbulent era in which she lived.
A woman often overlooked by history, Violet’s daring act shook the world and left an indelible mark. This production offers a rare opportunity to delve into the psyche of a suppressed Victorian woman who defied societal norms and challenged the political establishment of her time. From her privileged upbringing in Ireland (her father was a Lord) to her ‘conversion’ (from Protestantism to Catholicism) and eventual confrontation with fascism, audiences will witness the gripping journey of a woman driven by conviction and courage.
Actor and writer Alice Barry delivers a mesmerising performance, embodying the complexities and nuances of Violet Gibson’s character with unparalleled skill and emotional depth. Gibson’s legacy is honoured with authenticity and respect.
This show is more than just a theatrical production; it’s a timely exploration of power, resistance, and the enduring legacy of individuals who dare to challenge injustice. Gibson’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.
“Violet Gibson, the woman who shot Mussolini” will be performed at the Watergate Theatre on June 8 at 8pm. Tickets are €16.
