Fianna Fáil councillor, Michael McCarthy has been elected Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council for the first time following June's meeting of the local authority held earlier today (Friday).
Cllr McCarthy has been a member of Kilkenny County Council since 2014 and served as Cathaoirleach of the Castlecomer Municipal District.
Addressing councillors a short time ago, the Freshford native said he was 'humbled' and 'greatly honoured' to take on the position.

The Fianna Fail councillor received an impressive 1,489 first preference votes in the local elections earlier this month, securing his council seat for the third consecutive time.
Meanwhile, Cllr Peter 'Chap' Cleere of Fianna Fáil has been elected to the role of Vice-Chairperson.
