Kilkenny could have its very first female Fine Gael TD following the selection of Catherine Callaghan to contest the upcoming General Election.
Ms Callaghan, a Carlow native, will join Kilkenny councillors David Fitzgerald and Michael Doyle in the hunt for a Dáil seat in the Carlow-Kilkenny constituency.

The latter two will be no strangers to Kilkenny voters, having successfully contested local elections here on multiple occasions, while the Carlow election hopeful lost out on the final seat in the Tullow Local Election Area by a single vote in June's local elections.
Ahead of the Fine Gael convention at the Woodford Dolmen Hotel last night (Thursday), it had been predicted by many that Pat Deering, a TD in the area from 2011 to 2020 would have been the leading contender for selection in the Carlow area, with Kilkenny's Orla Kelly, who contested the local elections last month was also hotly tipped.
